Gay Matthew Mitcham verontwaardigd over duikelnichten in Vlaamse media

Zijn teleurstelling uiten dat niet meer topsporters hun coming-out doen. Dat is ‘alles’ wat Australiër Matthew Mitcham (20) moest doen om de Vlaamse mainstream media te halen. Daarvoor kwam de Olympische duikkampioen enkel aan bod in de medaillestatistieken.

Mitcham is terug van een reis door Frankrijk en Italië, en is klaar om zijn gouden medaille te – euh – verzilveren in sponsorcontacten. Zijn manager David Flaskas ziet potentieel in China en in Italië, waar hij op straat werd herkend.

Op zijn eerste post-Olympische persconferentie uitte Mitcham ook zijn verontwaardiging over sportlui die in de kast blijven.

“Ik was erg verbaasd dat ik de enige man op de Spelen was die zich geout heeft”, aldus de 20-jarige Mitcham in een interview met de Australische krant Sydney Morning Herald. “Het is een beetje triest, vind ik, want statistisch gezien moeten er veel meer zijn. Natuurlijk is het een beslissing die ieder voor zich moet nemen, ik wil niemand onder druk zetten. Ik ben alvast trots dat ik uit de kast ben, dat ik een voorbeeld ben voor anderen.”

But the 20-year-old will be remembered equally for courageously “coming out” about his homosexuality before the Games, a decision he on Tuesday acknowledged as vital in his stunning gold medal display.

“I don’t think it personally contributed to how well I did because it wasn’t something I was fretting about beforehand,” Mitcham said after returning from a month’s holiday in Europe.

“It’s always just me, I’m comfortable with myself. At least it (coming out meant it) wasn’t a surprise to everybody else. And I am glad that I did it before I went away, than afterwards because there have been a few coming out after the Olympic Games and I just wanted to be a bit different.”

Mitcham admitted his one-in-10,000 situation in Beijing – which even prompted a public apology from the NBC for their gay snub of the champion diver – came as a major surprise to him.

“I was actually very surprised that I was the only `out’ male at the Olympic Games,” he said. “It’s a little bit sad because, statistically, there should be a lot more. “But, you know what, it’s each to one’s own and I’m not going to pressure anybody to come out of the closet because it’s their own choice.”But I’m proud to be there and proud to be that one that lots of other people can look up to.”

Er wordt veel geschreven over Mitchams mogelijke commerciële deals, maar Matthew wil vooral financiële zekerheid. “Geld was een bekommernis de voorbije twee jaren. Ik wil me graag voorbereiden op [de volgende Olympische Spelen in] Londen zonder die zware last.”
